    Sustainability is crucial

We commissioned a bio-mass boiler to minimize our impact on the environment

Another milestone

Unilever Sri Lanka established another milestone in its 70 years of manufacturing history by commissioning a bio-mass boiler at their main manufacturing plant.

The large amount of steam used in the manufacturing process at Unilever Sri Lanka was hitherto generated using boilers fired by fuel oil. Burning fuel oil impacts the environment through the emission of carbon dioxide and sulphur. Besides, furnace oil can be quite expensive. To counter the inefficiencies of furnace oil, alternative fuel options were explored. However after evaluating many options, the bio mass boiler emerged as the most environmentally friendly and cost efficient option.

Carbon neutral

The reduction in green-house gas emissions is significant. The replacement of the fuel boilers by the bio-mass boiler makes 85% of USL's energy use carbon neutral, and as such, 85% of USL's manufacturing can now be classified as 'green'. Furthermore, the creation of employment opportunities in excess of 50-75 persons to work not only on the project sites but also in the procurement and transportation of agro residues would undoubtedly assist in the national economy.

Expertise

Silvermill Coco Ventures Pvt. Ltd, who have the expertise and experience in this field were appointed to supply the bio-mass fuels and operate the boiler on Unilever Sri Lanka's behalf.
