Sunlight

Sunlight – a household name

Sunlight, the world famous versatile household soap, was the first brand of the multinational Unilever. Introduced to consumers in 1884, it was also the world's first laundry soap to be packaged and branded.

Sunlight soon became a household name simply because of its multi-purpose nature, great washing ability, as well as its mildness towards the human skin – a combination no other soap bar could achieve until then. The impact Sunlight made in the lives of the consumer, and its popularity as a brand, made it, as well as the founding company, Unilever, an international brand which portrayed unprecedented quality and commitment towards the consumer.

Sunlight continues to shine bright in Sri Lanka

Sunlight was the first Unilever brand to be introduced to the local consumer market. Initially imported to Sri Lanka in 1900, soon a local manufacturing plant was established to meet the growing demands for the soap. Since the initial manufacturing of the local Sunlight soap in 1940, new products and variants have been added to the Sunlight portfolio to provide consumers with a choice as well as a better washing experience.

A part of Sri Lankan heart and soul

From day one, the brand captured the hearts of consumers all around Sri Lanka simply for its superior washing ability, and it mildness – in fact, most Sri Lankans consider Sunlight to be a local brand. The brand has remained true to the Sri Lankan values and beliefs it stood for from its inception. Celebrating “Rural Life” and then “Brightening up the Nation”, Sunlight has to date highlighted the beauty of Sri Lankans and their lives.

For generations Sunlight has proved to be the most popular multi-purpose soap bar in Sri Lankan homes. It has remained the number one choice amongst housewives for decades.

And the memorable Sunlight jingle has captured the hearts of the young and old alike – a nostalgic tune that brings back warm memories of home and family.

Sunlight has come a long way since the introduction of the versatile soap bar. Today in Sri Lanka it provides the consumer with a range of laundry soaps as well as, detergent powder, Sunlight currently enjoys close to 60% % market share and remains as the clear market leader in the Sri Lankan laundry market.
