7 year old wins Unilever international schools arts project
A budding young artist Sasini Nawoda Wickramathunge visited London representing Sri Lanka and saw her work of art displayed in a celebration at Tate Modern London on March 30 alongside other young artists from all over the world.
This is part of the Unilever International Schools Art Project where the Western Province school children in Sri Lanka participated.
The artwork created by seven year old Sasini from Sri Sangamitta Girl’s College, Maradana entitled “ Inside Out” was adjudged the winner by Unilever UK.
The Unilever International Schools Art Project, now in its fifth year encourages young people from around the world to create a painting, a sculpture or even a small installation on a given theme. This year, thousands of young artists from 11 countries around the world including Mexico, China, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Russia, Zimbabwe, USA and the UK have created works of art on the theme “ Inside Out: Conceal and Reveal”. It provides an excellent opportunity to show creativity and vitality of local children to the international audiences by encouraging them to create their own art-work.
“ It is with great pleasure, I note that one of our young artists have won international recognition at an art competition. We, at Unilever, are proud to be a part of this achievement. Sri Lanka has a lot of talented artists and our programmes will open doors for them to participate and win”, said Dr. Anura Ekanayake, Director HR& CR, Unilever Sri Lanka.
Unilever Sri Lanka took part in this international art competition for the first time and next year it will conduct an island-wide art competition to select the best art to send for the international competition.
Unilever Sri Lanka organised an exhibition, which was held on 4th March in Colombo where 30 selected winners were given certificates and a gift voucher. All other participants were given a certificate for their participation.
