Unilever Sri Lanka celebrates Chairman's Awards

It was an evening of celebrations and new determination, as the management of Unilever Sri Lanka gathered at the Cinnamon Grand Oak Room to review the 2010 performance and turbo charge the Compass for 2011 and beyond. The grand climax of the evening was annual Chairman’s Awards. 28 initiatives stemming from a wide array of cross functional teams competed for the coveted Chairman’s Awards based upon the 4 Compass non-negotiables.

The Chairman’s Awards ceremony was the labour of love of the USL Management Committee and a group of managers who worked tirelessly to create and establish a forum to recognize and celebrate USL’s brightest stars for their exceptional performance and contribution to the business in 2010. The awards were centred on the Compass non-negotiables, under the pillars of Winning with Brands and Innovation, Winning in the Marketplace, Winning with Continuous Improvement and Winning with People.

The Management Committee sat and sifted through a total of 28 entries to review and select the best initiatives. The initial screening consisted of an elimination round where the primary consideration was impact to business in terms of business results, after which the short listed entries were read and scored individually by each MC member under the 4 criteria for judging. Each entry was scored under context and strategy, initiative and fit with the Compass, execution, and business impact. The first 3 criteria had a weight of 20% each and business results carried the balance weight of 40%.

Ramani Samarasundera, Marketing Director – Personal Care, who was one of the driving forces behind this initiative, recalls, “The entries were outstanding, and it was amazing to sit back and consider all that we as a team had achieved in 2010… We had to consider the second decimal place in some categories to select the winner – the competition was that close.”

The winners were announced amidst the thunderous applause as the emcees, Makshoodh Meerasaibu and Rumal Fernando, read out citations for each of the nominated teams, ensuring that the entire USL team was made aware of the effort and commitment put in by their colleagues. The excitement reached a peak as the first annual Chairman’s Awards winners were announced as follows:

  • Winning with brands and Innovation - Foods Business exceptional growth
  • Winning in the Market Place - Signal - Excellence in Consumption Building
  • Winning with Continuous Improvement - Morph IT - Transformation with a passion
  • Winning with People - Workforce Categorization

While the nominees were commended by the entire management team for their exceptional performance, the winners walked away with a glittering award and the knowledge that they have contributed truly outstanding work to keep Unilever Sri Lanka flying high.
