Unilever Sri Lanka supports flood relief efforts
With torrential rains bringing about flooding in many areas around the country, Unilever Sri Lanka geared up to support those affected through the help of both global and local partnerships. Tying up with global Unilever Foundation partner, Save the Children, Unilever Sri Lanka donated funds to the organization to reach out to 340 households affected by the flooding.
Save the Children helped distribute essential hygiene packs for 140 families in the East as well as 200 families in the South, reaching over 400 children in both provinces. In the East, flood relief was given to two low-lying divisions in the Batticaloa District while in the South, support was given to similar areas in the Hambantota District.
The Divisional Secretary in the Batticaloa District noted that the assistance given by Unilever and Save the Children would enable the families and children to stay clean and free from disease when they are in the temporary shelters and once they return to their respective homes. In the South, the packs were instrumental in preventing the spread of communicable deceases due to the addition of toilet cleaning liquids, floor cleaning chemicals and personal hygiene items.
In addition to the partnership with Save the Children, Unilever Sri Lanka also tied up with the local officials in the Chilaw district to support 2,500 flood affected individuals by donating essential hygiene items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, and soap. The donation were met with warm welcome as it was just in time to add some seasonal joy to the people who were stranded due to the flooding.
